Understanding the Benefits of Quercetin

Quercetin supplements have become popular over the years as a way of benefitting certain health conditions. It is actually pigment that you can naturally find in fruits, vegetables and many plants. It is a flavonol that is a sub-category coming under flavonoids. Flavonoids are known to have many health benefits and they are produced by many plants. It is impossible for the human body to produce.

Some of the sources of quercetin are berries, grapes, onions, apples, citrus fruits, broccoli, tomatoes, red wine etc. You can also find a quercetin supplement 480mg that will provide much of the same benefits. These have antioxidant properties. There are free radicals in the body that can increase signs of ageing and the risk of disease and antioxidants can provide protection to the body from these free radicals. There are certain factors that contribute to free radicals such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and chemical toxins.  Quercetin can reduce inflammation in the body. This is a natural response in the body that occurs due to injury or stress. It promotes healing of the body. But when there is chronic inflammation, there are negative consequences to the body. It has been found in animal studies that quercetin can reduce acute and chronic inflammation. There is also some evidence regarding protection against arthritis. But more research is required to understand whether the same benefits can be found in humans.

There are also properties in quercetin that can minimise the risk of cancer. It does this by preventing the spread of cancer cells in the body. So you can look into a diet that is naturally high in quercetin to get this benefit. And increasing vegetables and fruits in your diet can have other health benefits as well. It has been found in studies regarding mice that quercetin can help restrict the growth of cancer cells in the prostate. But there is still research required to see the dose of quercetin that the human body can handle and other types of cancers that this can have a positive impact on. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are neurodegenerative diseases and quercetin can play a part in preventing these. Oxidative stress can be one of the causative factors for neurodegenerative diseases and this occurs when there is an imbalance of free radicals in the body. As quercetin is a powerful antioxidant, it is believed to help fight free radical damage.

Because of the antibacterial properties of quercetin, it is a great supplement in preventing possible infections. It is effective against most bacteria that may cause issues in the skin, respiratory problems, stomach and intestines. It may also help protect the body against viruses like herpes simplex virus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus etc. Many of us suffer from allergies and one of the treatments that are provided when there are allergic reactions is antihistamine. There are anti-allergy properties in quercetin so that it can behave similarly to an antihistamine. More studies are required to understand whether it can have a positive effect on other conditions such as asthma.
