Different Types of Web Hosting

161Views

Web hosting refers to renting or buying of space in a server to house a website on the World Wide Web. A server is a computer that contains the files to your website. There are different hosting plans offered by the web hosting service depending on your requirement. You need to select reliable web hosting services to maintain a strong online presence especially if you are involved in e-commerce.

There are many different types of web hosting that you can consider for your website. First, you need to consider “do I need a web hosting service?” and then proceed once you realise your requirements.    An option available for entry level web hosting is shared hosting. The server that stores your website will also store several other websites. So all the domains are sharing the same resources such as the CPU and RAM. The cost of the shared hosting plans are quite low because of the sharing of resources and this can be an affordable alternative to someone who is just starting their website. There are also many useful tools that you will be provided with such as website builders, WordPress hosting etc. There are some drawbacks because of the sharing of resources. Sometimes, the surges in use by others can affect the user experience and performance of your website. Therefore, shared plans are best for websites that don’t expect a lot of traffic.

You will have more control over the server with dedicated server hosting as the server will be exclusively used by you. Your website is the only website that is stored in it and you will be able to have exclusive admin access. There is a lot of control provided to you in terms of operating systems, security features etc. But this high level of control can be very expensive and therefore, this is a hosting plan that only websites with high web traffic can consider. And you will also need a lot of specialised technical knowledge for the installation and operation of the server.

VPS or virtual private servers give an alternative to those who look for the benefits of a dedicated server and a shared server. This is when your website requirement doesn’t need a dedicated server. But it gives you more control than you have in a shared hosting plan. Each website has its own space in the server even though they still share physical space with other websites. There are more features and flexibility offered to the website owners with VPS hosting in terms of storage but there is a limitation to this. This hosting plan will not be able to handle high web traffic and there is still the risk of your website’s performance being affected by a spike in other websites’ performance.

Cloud hosting is very popular at the moment and it refers to many computers working together sharing computing resources. It allows the website owners to use many resources without having to build computing infrastructure. This solution works through a network. It is also very easy to scale cloud hosting plans and you will only have to pay for what you need for the time being. You can scale down or up when required.
